The radiocarbon tests for Igbo Ukwu date the site to
between the ninth and tenth centuries A.D. This early date has however been
questioned by Babatunde Lawal. Among other things, he questions the unusually
good state of preservation of associated finds of textile, thread, wood,
calabash and beads in an acidic soil in which the bronzes were found. He
believes that the bronzes are probably not earlier than the fifteenth century
