The
Igbo ethnic nation is located in the central portion of eastern Nigeria
The Igbo cultural area is less homogeneous than the Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba
areas. As a matter of fact then are few urban settlements. The dense populations
of the area, one of the highest in Tropical Africa, are found mostly in villages.
Farming is a major economic activity in this area. A portion of the compound
land is usually given to garden cultivation by the women. Major farming takes
place farther away from the homesteads with crop such as yams, cassava and rice
being dominant. Palm produce are often extensively collected. Many inhabitant of
the area especially those in the working age group have migrated to other parts
of the federation partly because of the high density of population in the area
and partly because of the limited space for expansion. In these other areas,
Igbo people are actively in trading at various levels.
