NOK ART

The period between the first millennium B.C. and the first millennium A.D. saw a number of art traditions in North Africa. The great Pharaonic civilisation along the Nile valley had declined, and its works of art had experienced Persian, Hellenistic and Roman influences. West of Egypt, the Carthaginian sculptures were a manifestation of a combination of Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Aegean influences. The art of Axum and Meroe received great influences from Egypt.
During this time, in Africa south of the Sahara there developed an indigenous tradition of terracotta sculptures the like of which has yet to be recorded elsewhere, but the quality of which is comparable to the art of those civilisations to the north.
