OWO DISCOVERY

During building operations at Egberen Street to the north of Okiti-Asegbo, the hill on which the Owo claim they first settled after their arrival from Ife, fragments of terracotta sculptures were found which Chief Justus Akeredolu of the Owo Museum recognised as of great importance. He managed to dissuade the workers from further openings until the site was scientifically studied. Before the writer excavated this site, he was told that it was originally used for rituals connected with Aja; although the present priest (Alaja) pointed to a grove which is now being used for that purpose. For this reason, the site was named Igbo’ Laja, i.e., priest’s (Alaja’s) grove.
