ETHNIC NATIONS AND CULTURE AREAS
|
||||||||||||
A general description of Nigeria in the days before
political independence was that it was a mere geographical expression. The
description refers to the complexity of peoples who have been brought under one
umbrella as a nation only through the political activities of Britain during the
first sixty years of this century. It is a historical fact that the contiguous
areas of land which came under British administration, following treaties with
the Germans and the French, were christened as Nigeria as used by Flora Shaw,
wife of Lord Lugard, in a letter to the London Times in 1897. With independence
and after, the fact is still recognised that the multiplicity of the ethnic
nations and culture areas within the political boundaries of Nigeria constitute
a significant characteristic of the country. Some of the ethnic nations and
culture areas extend into neighbouring countries.
