TRENDS TOWARDS ONE ETHNIC NATION AND CULTURE AREA

Particularly since independence the governments of the Federation have devised many ways and means of promoting unity among the diverse ethnic nations and culture areas of the country. For instance considerable importance has been attached to cultural festivals at national levels to highlight the richness as well as the complimentarily of the ways of life within the borders of the country. Federal Government colleges which admit students from all parts of the country have been established in the states, as a practical means of making the youths of the country to live and work together and see themselves as one. Many other activities, particularly sports, are being stressed as a means of forging one nation. Occasionally, some political developments have generated stresses and strains in the move towards the emergence of one ethnic nation and culture area. The issue of one national lingua franca, which is not English language, remains controversial. Party political affiliation during the civilian regime were heavily ethnic-oriented and tended to make the country fall apart. The civil war which raged for thirty months from July, 1967 to January 1970 shook the country to its roots. The country has emerged from the war more united than it was before it, especially with the creation of twelve states on May 27, 1967 under a strong Federal government. The goal of the Federation during the war has been kept constantly in view in the post war years. The goal is succinctly in the war jingo "To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done". The trend today, which is becoming stronger than before, is towards the evolution of one ethnic nation and culture area.
