Yelwa is a mound just south of
Yelwa town, north of Bussa in the North Western State, known
archaeologically simply as RS63/32. It was excavated by the Department of
Antiquities in 1966-67. The site, whose occupants were fully iron-using,
produced an interesting series of terracotta sculptures which are unlike those
of Nok or Daima. The radiocarbon dates for these sculptures range from the
second to the seventh centuries AD.
